Next Generation Computers - What Does the Future Hold?

microsoft-surfacecomputer01

Microsoft released the idea of a new technology in development called “surface computing” which uses multi-touch technology to interact with a user or multiple users all at once. The wonder of this is that unlike with a traditional mouse and keyboard, this innovation is capable of processing multiple points of interaction on the screen. This is what the next generation computers will resemble.

It may be possible that soon the days of purchasing refurbished desktops or laptops or even refurbished monitors comparable to newer computers will be gone. The secret project codenamed “Milan” introduced some next generation computers in 2007 in the form of a coffee table. The features and capabilities of this extraordinary technology are boarding on science fiction. Military and governmental procedures are already utilizing such multi-touch technologies in their areas of operation. This innovation compliments the idea that surface computing capable computers will replace traditional computers all together in the near future.

Not only is the screen touch sensitive, the multi-touch technology can interact with physical objects placed on the table top. It has infrared cameras built into it that literally allow it to see what is sitting on the tabletop. Not only can it sense that something is sitting on the surface, it can recognize what it is and allow direct interaction on the screen with whatever may be placed on the table. Multiple wireless functions are integrated into the surface computing platform, allowing it to communicate with other wireless devices placed on its surface. Take a picture, place it on the tabletop, and watch the image appear on the surface. Then place a different wireless device on the surface, for example a camera phone, and with your fingertips drag the image on the table to the device. There, without any wires or time-consuming connections and syncing, you can transfer material effortlessly from one device to another with next generation computers.

For now, the focus of the next generation computers is to sell to retail clients. Service Pack 1 has officially been released as of May 2009. The $5,000 to $10,000 machines will, with certainty, eventually be made available in local retail stores. Looking even farther into the future, the goal of developers is to one day allow people to live in an environment surrounded by a network of computers that can all interact with each other. Perhaps the coffee table will have a surface that acts as a remote and your kitchen tabletop will have a computer that allows you to purchase food. Exactly what the future holds, we cannot say.

Online Identity - How to Protect Yourself from Identity Theft

englehart

The rate of identity theft has not seen a decrease in recent years despite the knowledge on the topic that has spread. Your online identity can be more vulnerable to thieves than physical things like stolen credit cards and pilfered mail because if they can one tidbit about you, they can usually have access to other information as well. In 2007, identity theft ranked first on the list of reported frauds according to the Federal Trade Commission. As these reports have surged, more information about protecting yourself has been made available.

Thanks to the internet, great conveniences like making purchases, holding reservations and even accessing your bank account 24/7 is made possible. On the flipside, this has provided identity thieves with a whole new venue for stealing personal information, finances and more. You must learn to protect your online identity. If you are asked to provide personal information like your name, address, phone number, Social Security number or any kind of account numbers online, find out their procedures for sharing your information. No matter what, avoid giving your Social Security number to any website unless you are opening a bank account or applying for a loan. Every trustworthy site will have a secure socket layer to prevent thieves from accessing your personal information. Reading up on a site’s privacy policy will tell you more.

Another way you can protect yourself is to never reply to pop-ups or emails offering credit cards or loans. If you are interested in these things, go straight to a reputable bank or agency to take care of these transactions. When you get emails from unknown senders, avoid clicking on links if you are interested in seeing what it offers. Instead type the address directly into your browser. Always keep your computer secure with an anti-virus program and keep your computer passwords secret. Never use obvious information like birthdays, anniversaries or names of loved ones for passwords. These are easy for thieves who may already have some information about you to guess and gain access to your online identity information. A good tip is to use both letters and numbers in any password.

While there is no way to absolutely guarantee the safety of your online identity from unscrupulous people, these precautions will certainly deter the likelihood of a theft. Protecting your personal information is the most important thing you can do when staying safe online. Share with your family the necessary safety measures they should take to keep themselves safe from online scammers.

Search Battle - Bing vs. Google

the_searchers

In the world of search engine dominance, Google has held all the cards for a long time. As one of the biggest companies in the world, some believe Google has become too big for its own good. Its “do no evil” motto is losing significance as more and more people become irritated with Google’s perceived arrogance. The newest engine on the scene, Bing, is Microsoft’s next attempt to beat Google out. The questions arise, then: will search engine optimization companies get pulled into the fray? Will website developers have to rethink the way they optimize web pages? Who will win the great search battle of Bing vs. Google?

It seems that it is about time a competitor to Google stepped in, even if is it just another big company like Microsoft. Who else could stand a chance against a dominating power like Google? To re-level the playing field, Bing promises to yield more current and relevant search results. Without competition, monopolies form and progress stops. The search battle between Bing vs. Google, two extremely powerful and rich companies, could change the way websites are optimized forever. Optimizers have been aware since their market was created that search engine optimization is unpredictable. Now it may become even more so.

Bing’s unique, slick interface is attractive and intriguing to the eye. It seems to still have a few kinks to work out, however. On some searches, the up and coming search engine has been known to return results where 90% of the content was irrelevant, especially in image queries. Bing definitely has the potential to compete with Google in the search battle, but it will take time. Google is more than a brand name. It pioneered the way to a free internet economy. Google allows users a free experience while delegating the responsibility of footing the bill to advertisers. Microsoft has always been at the other end of the scale.

Phrases like “Go Google it” have become household sayings. It will take a lot of effort and time on the part of Bing to change that. The search battle has begun, and it will not take long before sides start taking hits. Who knows, in the years to come we may be Binging our way across cyberspace while the degraded Google sits in the corner, alone and forgotten. Whatever the results may be, it will take time to reach any conclusion about the outcome of this battle.

Mac vs. PC - Which One is For You?

mac_20vs_20pc

Everyone knows about the ongoing controversy of the Mac vs. PC battle. Each has its share of strengths and weaknesses. What is seems to come down to is personal preference. If you have an informal alliance with either brand and have been happy with it in the past, stick with it. If you are a first-time computer buyer or you are looking for a less expensive computer, go with a PC. If the thought of getting viruses scares you to death, purchase a Mac. Whatever you use at work, it makes sense to buy the same for home use so they match and there is no need to change your mind set when you are at home or work.

As far as the differing operating systems on a Mac vs. PC, both types boast top-of-the-line systems that operate well. People who purchase computers with security concerns should go with a Mac. They are simply safer. This is because various nasty viruses, worms and Trojan horses are written to attack the Windows operating systems. Mac computers cannot run “.exe” files, something that can seem a curse, but it is a security blessing. Other traps still await Mac users, but no computer is safe from every attack. However, because of the curse Macs have of not being able to open “.exe” files, software is almost always combatable with a PC when it is not with a Mac.

Many basic programs like Microsoft Office and Outlook for Windows are mimicked on Mac computers as Mac 2008 and Entourage. They do basically the same thing and Mac users are not put off by this. However, specialty programs that professionals and scientists use usually only with Windows operating systems. For gamers, the obvious choice in the Mac vs. PC debate is a PC. For price, PC is also always the winner, especially when purchasing refurbished desktops or refurbished laptops. Mac laptops come much more expensive than Windows and Apple monitors of the same dimensions as a Dell, Samsung or Acer can cost three times more. Buying a refurbished monitor will save you even more.

In the persistent search battle of which type of computer model is better, a Mac or a PC, there is still no clear-cut winner. With the benefits and disadvantages of each, it ultimately comes down to personal preference. Both types reliably execute the tasks they were designed to perform. Besides, there are more options out there than these two powerhouses. Who knows, in a decade or two we could be utilizing a completely different system and the Mac vs. PC debate can end.

WordPress - Use it to Build Your Website

wordpress-logo-stacked-rgb-copy

Why is WordPress the new go-to method for building a website? It is a revolutionary method of creating a successful website that effectively communicates your ideas and information to the public. In the past, it was impossible to build a website on your own unless you were educated in web developing. Now, however, the content management system (CMS) called WordPress makes it much easier for simple internet goers to create and edit whole pages on a website without the need of hiring a website developer.

WordPress, like any other CMS is software that allows you to create a basic template of a webpage and then publish pages in this format. This software has an immense collection of available literature related to managing, expanding and editing an existing website into something that looks and navigates professionally. Also, basic accessible themes are easily obtained and installed by placing files in the correct administration folders and activating them. As the developer of your own website, you can do this all on your own from the admin console. More advanced themes are available at a small cost, which is certainly worth the price. Every purchased theme can be customized to match the exact color scheme and design that you are looking for. Buying templates is the way to go because it saves you time, hassle and money in the long run.

Of course, WordPress cannot do everything for you in terms of graphics. Software such as this is not designed to be graphic editing tools. This will need to be a separate process you develop with a different method than WordPress. Also, this CMS will standardize all your pages to look the same. If you want a different color scheme or other kind of theme on separate pages, WordPress is not for you. This is rare, however, because most people understand the importance of continuity in a website so visitors do not get lost or confused. Any website developed with WordPress must also be HTML based, not flash based. Flash animation is a more complicated venue that WordPress is not designed to handle.

The benefits of WordPress in terms of cost effectiveness, available literature and easy user interface makes it very desirable among amateur website creators. Utilizing its convenient features will give you an inexpensive, professional-looking website to get your product, ideas or information known to the public. Begin by looking more into the advantages of WordPress today.

Google-Sony Team Up to Fight Amazon Kindle - Will Sony Get the Edge?

reader-vs-kindle-copy

The announcement made in March 2009 that there is a Google-Sony team up to fight Amazon Kindle has raised quite a few questions. While the Amazon Kindle has been stealing headlines and other means of getting attention from the Sony Reader, will this new alliance give the Sony Reader the competitive edge it is looking for? The announcement surely brought Sony back into the spotlight, something this is necessary to be a true competitor of Amazon. These E-book Readers have advantages over each other that must be considered when coming to a conclusion about whether the alliance will be good enough to make Sony a real competitor with Amazon.

Sony has more than twice as many titles available through its e-book store, a major plus for it. It also features an attractive touch screen and backlight. Amazon’s biggest draw is that it offers free wireless coverage through Sprint’s 3G network. There are multiple points that end up coming out at about a tie in terms of benefits of one over the other, like storage capacity, supported formats, size and weight. The Google-Sony team up to fight Amazon Kindle raises another question: the terms of the deal Sony and Google made allows Google to make similar deals with other companies, so why hasn’t Amazon struck a deal as well? Some speculate that the free Google aspect is not appealing to Amazon who hopes to sell $5 to $10 eBooks to Kindle users.

The Google-Sony team up to fight Amazon Kindle is actually good news to any e-book reader because since Google and Sony will be offering free e-books, Amazon will either be forced to reciprocate to keep business going or form an alliance with Google similar to what Sony did. It is clear that the Google-Sony deal was a smart move on Sony’s part because it really needed a way to one-up Amazon. Sony still has some improvements to make, like incorporating a wireless feature for downloading content more conveniently.

For now, many argue that the wireless features and lower price cost of the Amazon Kindle ($359 vs. $399) give it the advantage over the Sony Reader. Incorporating wireless features in combination with the Google-Sony team up to fight Amazon Kindle may just give Sony the edge it needs to become a true Amazon competitor. So many people are on the fence in this matter that an update like this could make all the difference.

mini-copy
mputer-virus

Swine Flu is for real, but Computer Flu is and always will be nothing more than a hoax.

Every computer, whether it is a personal home computer, business computer or otherwise, should have some kind of reliable anti-virus software if the computer has an internet connection. Malware, spyware, worms, viruses and other newly emerging threats are increasing in number and maliciousness every day. Why risk exposing your computer to the damaging effects of exposure to one or more of these threats? Anti-virus software provides you with computer security and can extend the life of your PC. If you do not have anti-virus software because you don’t want to pay the cost, compare the $100-or-less product with a complete computer replacement or repair if you get a virus. The importance of protecting your computer is obvious.

There are many brands and varieties of anti-virus software available on the market today. Companies recognize the importance of protecting your computer investment, so many exist that provide great computer security. Some are basic while others are extremely comprehensive. Particular brands pride their products in being able to detect viruses, Trojan horses and worms automatically. Some varieties use more memory and slow down computer systems more than others. A few of the best brands have a feature that allows it to make automatic updates from the internet so it is always up-to-date with the highest level of protection to ensure computer security. All these factors and more make the prices vary.

Top features to look for include extensive computer security features that will protect your PC from all sorts of malware and other threats. A system that is able to perform its tasks without drawing attention to itself-in other words without using too much memory-is a major draw. Safe and Useful Free Software

Downloading free software from the internet can be a beneficial tool to getting useful computer software, but anyone getting anything for free from the internet should be aware of the possible risks. It is possible that downloading software could come with bundled spyware or adware when products are offered for free. Many valid companies these days are developing free software, called “freeware” to draw customers. Usually the free version is a simplified version of the paid title, with fewer features but to give the user an idea of the product. What you should be wary of is downloading something you find in a pop up window, link or advertisement. These are specifically more dangerous than something you find on your own through web browsing.

Manufacturers of expensive products tend to give the general public the idea that the only good software you can get is expensive. This is not true based on the increasing amount of free software availability online. Other than simplified versions of software made available for free online, freeware programmers, often self-taught consumers, are developing free applications for anyone to download for free. This really challenges the old notion that expensive products are the only way to get good quality. Many of these self-taught programmers are simply nice folks spreading a useful product where they see the need for it. Free software is often designed after the expensive products and provides very similar features and benefits as the “name brand.”

To decrease the likelihood that you may accidentally download free software that will harm your computer, research programs before you install them. Look for forums where others that have experience with the product have written reviews and pointed out possible dangers. Also be sure you have an anti-virus program installed on your computer before you download anything questionable. This will usually catch anything harmful before any damage is done. You can use anti-virus software to scan your download for spyware, as well. Also, you should periodically scan your entire system to make sure it is secure.

Free software is an attractive alternative to spending a lot of money on a product. After making the necessary expenditure to buy your own computer with great hardware there may be little funds left for software. The central concern when you download free products is safety. If you take the necessary precautions, you will certainly find many dozens of reliable free software offers online to help you save money without putting your computer at risk.
